End to End: A Long Trail Journey

End to End: A Long Trail Journey by Shirley HarmanIf you like dogs, hiking, mountains or outdoor adventure you’ll like this book!

End to End is the True-Life story of a 3 week/275 mile backpacking trip in the Green Mountains of Vermont. With her two beloved dogs as her only companions, the author walked from Canada to Massachusetts, in the trip of a lifetime.

This is a beautiful story that will engage the reader with its poignancy, honesty and humor as the author struggles with the physical challenges of the hike as well as the bigger issues of love, life and commitment.

In 2016, at the age of 58, the author drove 3,500 miles across the country, leaving her job, husband and 6 furry dog/kids at their home in California. With two dogs as hiking companions she hiked from one end of Vermont to the other, a 275 mile trek on the Long Trail, down the spine of the Green Mountains. And then she came home: renewed, revitalized and empowered to live life on her own terms. This is her story. It is a story about being a late middle aged woman facing the reality that her years of good health and easy mobility are foreseeably finite, a story about traveling 7000 miles with 2 dogs as constant and wonderful companions and about appreciating the gift of their incredible friendship and what they brought to the journey, and about understanding the terms of their commitment to each other. It’s a story about processing the deaths- and the lives- of her parents, and of honoring them by reclaiming her own life. Lastly, it’s a love story too, of course.

A refreshing read. Enjoyed it. – Crazy Cat Lady

The author created a good image for the challenges of hiking the long trail. Her experience with getting to town will make me pause and consider lending a ride. I also enjoyed the pay it forward stories. – Allen

If you are looking for a story that will inspire you, motivate you to conquer your fears, make you laugh, make you cry and just overall leave you with a feeling of joy, then read this book and encourage your friends to do the same!! – Amazon Customer

Shirley skillfully wove the beauty, freedom, and exhilaration of a challenging hike-through with deeper themes (ex. dealing with the death of a parent, the deep love between a person and her dog). I eagerly read through this book in just a few days – it was deep enough to be interesting and light enough to read on vacation. Highly recommend! – MP

A friend told me I had to read this because it had all the things we love or could relate to: backpacking, dogs, relationship issues, family issues, humor, natural beauty, thought-provoking comments and good writing. I was not disappointed. Shirley is a wordsmith who can weave a wonderful story for her readers and inspire them to stretch themselves a little farther. Her honesty and openness is inspirational. And who doesn’t love a story involving loyal dogs! – Kindle Customer
