The Next Port

The Next PortThe Next Port by Heyward Coleman is a bold and entertaining memoir chronicling the five year voyage the author and his wife made sailing their 42-foot sailboat, Skimmer.

Readers will marvel at the warmth, generosity and wisdom the world had to offer them on this journey of a lifetime.

What began as letters to family and friends ultimately became an engaging book that chronicles the realization of a lifelong dream of the author and his wife to explore the world on a sailboat and is a powerful testament to the life and love that flourished during their five-year “world-wind” voyage.

The memoir begins with a flashback sequence as the reader is catapulted into a world of high-wind hurricanes and pirate-threats with adventures from Guantanamo, Cuba to Djibouti in the horn of Africa and nearly forty countries in between. From the joy of new friendships and landscapes to a broken autopilot in the middle of the Pacific, a four-day storm heading for the Southern Cook Islands, and the despair of running Skimmer on the rocks, the seven seas were great teachers and have never been so restless—or forgiving.

Amazon Reviews:

A very enjoyable book that is easy to read. The five year journey aboard Skimmer is laid out in an inspirational and exciting way that gives the reader a feeling of almost being there. It certainly creates a desire to visit far away places. The narration is predominately about the places they visit, the people, cultures and ceremonies. The only mention of sailing is tidbits of information regarding winds, currents and time/distance traveled. – Vincent Miceli

I enjoyed the many aspects covered from the boat handling and trouble shooting descriptions to the navigation decisions and the partner/spouse relationship experiences. My wife and I have purchased a boat and intend to follow in part the path that was described here in the book. It along with other similar books will assist us in our journey home to NZ. It was an easy read and flowed well. – Janice Lynnete Taylor

An adventure every day spanning the globe over a couple of years. I wish I could afford a nice ship like that and have the time and leisure to do what they did. I’m grateful that they were able to have the opportunity to do it, and that they shared their awesome experience in this book. If you love the sea, love fishing, travel, and adventure, then this book is worth the read. – Jeffrey C. Lyons
